You may have noticed cameras on the sides of a few roads here is why they were there: New York State has to collect traffic data on its roads every three years. They check about a quarter of all roads each time, including roads that can get federal funding and any local roads with bridges or railroad crossings. This information is sent to the federal government to help determine funding. They also look at about 10% of local roads at random to estimate overall traffic across the state, which helps decide funding for local municipalities.
In the past, our region usually used rubber tubes on the road to count traffic. This year, we’ve switched to using cameras. These cameras are easier for people to notice, but they provide very accurate information about how many vehicles are on the road and what types they are. They also improve safety by keeping workers out of the roadway and can be used in almost any weather, unlike the tubes. Because of the change, we’ve been getting more questions from the public and local officials. To help explain the program better, we are sharing this information with local Highway Superintendents.
